Retreating back..
Today is Dashami the last day of Durga puja when Ma Durga is immersed into the Ganges..And like every bengali I too have a heavy heart on this day..
When I was small I used to go to see the Bisarjan (or the immersing of the idol of Ma Durga) in a lake in Behala with my cousins in the evening...Wide eyed with wonder i would watch as scores of idols from tiny to tall made their way on the shoulders of devotees down to the final immersion place..
The immersion place would be filled by devotees dancing to the dhaak beats and the smoke from the dhunuchi...
And I would silently shed tears (like a silly girl) seeing Ma Durga gradually sink into the water ..And if anybody noticed(which they hardly did) I would say uff eto dhoa (The smoke of the dhunuchi is unbearable)!!
My cousins would happily witness the noise, the colour and the grandeur with our newly bought balloons and ice creams as I kept getting sadder and sadder..
And while walking back home from there(the lake is at walking distance from my maternal grandma's place, where we all would gang up during the puja's!) I would become absolutely bereft and wonder why we have Bisarjan..
But now at this phase of my life after losing some of the most important people of my life I've realized that Bisarjan is really necessary more so because it teaches us that nothing in life is permanent or everlasting..It also teaches us to let go..Life keeps changing and we have to accept it like that..
And like every year Bisarjan has to take place to make way for a new idol next year, a new hope and a renewed faith
So as they say asche bochor aabar hobe..!

ReplyDeletePoignant!!!You seemed to have learnt a valuable lesson at a tender age.:-)
Thanks..:))
ReplyDeleteNice point. Most of us do not corelate Bisarjan (which is done here for Ganpati also) to aspects of real life. What our ancestors started as rituals make more sense as every single day passes. They were true genuises.
ReplyDeleteYes I completely agree..: )
ReplyDeleteBeautiful beautiful post..Love the vividness of your words..
